Style Tip: How to Style and Accessorise Your Home

With the long Easter weekend starting tomorrow, you may want to take the time to give your home a spring clean and rearrange some key areas to give them a refresh as we move into Spring. Our interior design team have shared their insights into styling and accessorising your home with both old and new items. It is important to remember that curating a beautiful space takes time and being patient whilst styling your home is key.

Quality Over Quantity

When it comes to home accessories consider selecting quality items over quantity. A unique piece may work better in your space than lots of smaller pieces that overwhelm it. Soft items such as rugs, throws and cushions should be balanced with decorative accessories such as vases and objets. Some of our favourite items include Alex McCarthy vases, Forwood Design shagreen trays and boxes and a classic Chanel coffee table book.

Proportions

It is essential to take some time to consider the scale and proportion of the space you are styling. When selecting accessories to style your home select a mix of items: small and large, tall and short and flat and wide to suit the proportions of your rooms.

Textures and Colour

Accessories of varying colour and texture help to build colour, depth and contrast into your home such as using a shagreen textured tray on your upholstered ottoman. Carefully bring colour into your accessories by considering your existing items. This will ensure that the design flows and the brighter and stronger colours are toned down by calmer, neutral colours.

Personality

Your home should showcase your personality and your chosen accessories should reflect this. By including some artwork, an objet from your favourite holiday, a family heirloom or an antique piece of furniture you will inject small elements of your personality. For your coffee table, selecting your favourite coffee table book alongside a trinket box and some flowers will add your personal touches to the room.

Styling

Start by placing your largest or widest accessories on your shelves first and spread out so that one shelf does not appear too heavy with these larger items as well as distributing colours and textures. Add the medium and small items next in smaller groups of threes to fives. Lastly place your vertical items, such as books, to add height. Take some time to move items around, step back and observe whilst trying to get the perfect balance and design that you are aiming for.
